What if you could fit your computer into your pocket? This seems like a likely future, given the current trends. As technology has evolved over the past few years, the lines between smartphone and PC capabilities have begun to blur. With drastic advances in processing power and agility, smartphones in the modern era have almost become fun-sized computers. For the gaming industry, smartphones have elevated the genre and become a more convenient and portable platform, offering performance, speed, and compatibility to level the playing field a bit more.
In this blog article, we look at how gaming smartphones compare to the traditional PC and dive into the debate of whether the mobile gaming industry might be capable of reaching PC-level performance. Now, we can answer the main question right now and state that gaming smartphones cannot fully replace the PC at the level we might need right now; however, we might be getting closer to that reality a lot sooner than we might think.
It’s pretty easy to understand that the gaming smartphones we have today are only the result of the esteemed PC design – at the end of the day, the traditional PC walked so gaming smartphones could run. However, the debate of which is the better option for gamers still rages on today, with each device having a list of advantages that might give you the better gaming edge.
The Personal Computer age began mostly in the 1970s when they became available to the public by major developers, like Apple. Soon after, PCs became faster, smaller, and more reliable with high-performance processors, larger memory capacities, and advanced features. On the other hand, the dedicated gaming smartphone only made its entry into the industry around the 2000s, trailing the smartphone revolution but only taking off more recently.
Suddenly, the gaming industry had a lot more options when it came to which device to use. Big hitters, like REDMAGIC, became synonymous with seamless graphics and impressive gaming features that would turn heads, sometimes even away from a PC screen. However, the general specs of the smartphone could never match or outweigh a PC’s capabilities.
It should be noted that some smartphone developers tried to bring PC-level performance to smartphones in the past as well. In 2015, Microsoft launched Windows Continuum, which was meant to bring a desktop-like experience to a mobile phone. Unfortunately, the idea fizzled out eventually due to several limitations. However, the push to mobile over PC still stood tall with new and improved gaming smartphones breaking boundaries in the industry.
The shift to gaming smartphones comes from a practical standpoint more than anything else. Over the last few years, smartphones have become an integral part of everyone’s lives. Deloitte reported that more than 7 in 10 people will use their smartphone as soon as they wake up, and that mobile phones are now the preferred device for browsing shopping websites, making online purchases, online searches, banking, and playing games. When compared to the PC, a gaming smartphone in particular can have a range of extra advantages.
A smartphone is generally a lot easier to use in a day-to-day setting than a PC. With a smaller frame and better portability, you’ll find it easier to whip out your REDMAGIC phone than you would to set up your PC.
One of the easiest draws for the traditional PC over mobile platforms was game compatibility. However, gaming titles today are now a lot more accessible on mobile devices, and emulation technology has allowed several gaming smartphones to easily mimic the PC setup to render PC-level games.
Generally, the smartphone market makes a lot more sense for the budget-conscious gamer. PC setups can be expensive, especially when paired with accessories. Gaming smartphones offer a cheaper route for beginners without compromising performance.
Since the days of eight-bit microprocessors, power has always pushed the PC to outplay the smartphone when it comes to processing power. While we cannot say that smartphones might outdo the PC, the developments in chipset and CPU technology for gaming smartphones have dramatically improved over time and have become a worthy contender in that arena for now.
Cloud gaming allows you to stream and play games online using any device, including mobile smartphones and tablets, without downloads or a dedicated PC.
Now, when we make these comparisons, we know that most desktop computers and PCs are often more equipped to deal with gaming than the average gaming smartphone. However, we also want to point out that the dynamic landscape that dictates that fact is constantly changing with every improvement and breakthrough in the mobile gaming industry.
At REDMAGIC, we’ve expanded our designs to replicate and match PC-level processing as much as possible within our gaming smartphone range. This is achieved through the latest Snapdragon chipsets, AI enhancements, and reliable emulation capabilities.
REDMAGIC has always pushed beyond boundaries and limitations to provide the best gaming experience possible for our fans. Now, in a world where PC-level performance is a must, we’re still making strides with our range of high-performance gaming smartphones and tablets. In fact, several of our gaming smartphones are used to emulate PC-level titles, a feat that would have been impossible a mere few years ago.
Armed with active cooling technology, enhanced chipsets and processing power, and a dedicated Game Space center to optimize controls and settings, REDMAGIC gaming smartphones can and will usher in a new era for gaming.
Last year, YouTuber Cyber Dopamine was blown away by our REDMAGIC 10 Pro, which could seamlessly run AAA titles like Cyberpunk, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout, and many more with its Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. He also compared the phone’s seamless cooling pulling in air and “spitting it out through the exhaust as if it were a gaming PC.” In another video, he further tests out the 10 Pro with other PC games, emulating GTA V, Witcher 3, and Skyrim, and more with Winlator.

He reached up to 40 frames per second running Witcher 3 and noted that there were people on Reddit and YouTube easily getting up to 70 frames per second with the same game as well on the 10 Pro.
Another reviewer who took the 10 Pro out for a spin was ETA Prime, who found that the phone performed exceptionally. Using the Dolphin Emulator, he played Auto Modellista and reached a 6X resolution, which he stated was “crazy for an Android device.”
TA Tech also tried out the 10 Pro by running Naruto with a PS2 emulator. The game ran at a flawless 60 frames per second and easily won him over with fantastic gameplay at the 5X resolution of the PS2.

So, while the gaming smartphone industry has pushed the boundaries of gameplay, we cannot yet say that the gaming smartphone will fully replace a desktop computer or PC at this stage. While mobile devices may provide advanced features and capabilities, they’re still restricted in other ways for the time being.
As we move ahead in the mobile gaming industry, we have to keep in mind that our goal is to amplify and enhance the user experience before outdoing competitor devices. The traditional PC has allowed us to elevate our craft, paving the way for the gaming smartphone technology we have today. At the end of the day, the PC and mobile gaming communities can both benefit from the innovations that the future has in store for all types of gamers, and REDMAGIC is excited to be part of that legacy for many years to come.
