How Comfort Affects Performance: Stay Ergonomic with the REDMAGIC 11 Air

We’ve all been there: slouched up or curled into an unfathomable position as you wrangle your way through another round of grinding, somehow completely unaware of your arms going numb or your shoulders screaming, at least until a few hours later when your body feels like you personally faced off against an Elden Ring boss in the flesh.

Comfort is possibly one of the most important, yet most neglected elements for gamers of every kind. While you may be putting your best game up on the screen, it’s easy to forget that your physical body is still very open to taking damage without the right ergonomic gaming environment.

Now, while you might immediately picture a PC gamer hunched over like a shrimp at first, mobile gamers are not at all immune to this negligence. In fact, mobile gaming makes it easier to forget proper posture and ergonomics for the sake of portability.

In this blog article, we look at how ergonomic management and comfort actively impact gaming performance while focusing on how our REDMAGIC 11 Air promotes lightweight comfort and healthy handling throughout every level. For now, let’s look at what ergonomics is and why it is so important for gamers and manufacturers to adhere to and prioritize it.

The Science of Comfort

At its essence, ergonomics refers to the design or arrangement of things to promote a healthier, safer environment and system for humans to interact with. The field of ergonomics looks at how to improve spaces and engineering to create more comfortable and efficient setups. It is a science that involves psychology, physiology, and industrial design techniques.

For the gaming industry, ergonomic designs often focus on comfortable grip and easy-to-hold devices. Gaming often requires hours of grinding and repetitive tasks, which can easily lead to bodily and mental fatigue. Gamer-related injuries and strain are no new phenomenon, however. When Nintendo was launched in 1889, a barrage of mild to life-threatening injuries quickly became prevalent, especially amongst the youth.

In fact, the term “Nintendinitis” – or Nintendo Thumb - was coined soon after to describe medical issues with the thumb, hand, and wrist caused by gaming with the popular console. However, muscle pain and injuries are also increasingly common with gaming smartphones and other gaming devices that require constant inputs, specific hand alignments, and fast movements.

According to a research paper by Wiliam Machado De Andrade, mobile gaming might actually show more prevalent bodily fatigue due to its portable nature. He states that while console and desktop computer gaming are likely to occur in controlled settings, mobile gaming can happen in varied places and situations.

He further states that some games may even demand that players “hold their devices with a single hand, making it difficult to distribute the weight and adjust the grip.” In addition, he noted that “small onscreen content can also prompt neck stretching, altering the body's axis.”

De Andrade continues to theorize that mobiles have become a “ubiquitous tool of everyday life,” and that users tend to adapt their bodies to positions they can better visualize the screening content and control narrative tasks, establishing a relation between the hand and the eyes that can force muscles and bones to adjust angles and weight distribution.

To add on to the medical consequences of prolonged gaming and inadequate ergonomic support, Fiziologix lists “looking down at electronic devices for extended periods” as one of the main causes of poor posture, which they state can lead to a variety of other conditions, including back and neck pain, headaches, decreased lung capacity, decreased circulation, fatigue, muscle strain, and joint pain.

However, video games are not going to turn you into dust any time soon when you ensure the correct ergonomic support and measures are put in place. This is the primary goal of these designs. To add to the advantages of ergonomic support, these preventative measures actively improve and elevate your gaming skills.

Ultimately, your state of comfort will directly affect your ability to perform at your best. You cannot maintain a proper kill streak when you’re battling hand cramps or joint pain. Ergonomic designs are built to keep you safe, but they also inadvertently optimize and improve your gaming skills by preventing injury, ensuring prolonged safe gaming sessions, and allowing you to game without strain or stress. Now, let’s look at some of the best ergonomic practices you might need to employ to keep your gaming habits healthy.

Gamer Ergonomics Best Practices

Gaming isn’t always just fun and, well, games. Your gaming habits and environment directly affect your physical, mental, social, and psychological health. This is why it’s important to always maintain a healthy setup and ensure ergonomic and comfortable gaming sessions. These are some best practices to ensure your gaming doesn’t lead to injury.

Fix Your Posture!

While we all know that it’s comfortable to curl into the shape of a cashew nut as you tackle a new level, maintaining a poor posture for prolonged periods will cause muscle pain, shoulder stiffness, and spinal issues. For mobile gamers, it might be easier to game with a pillow on your lap or desk in front of you to rest your arms against.

If you’re sitting at a desk, your knees should be bent about 90 degrees and possibly a little lower than the height of your hips to help keep you from falling. Your feet should also be firmly flat on the ground. Your forearms should remain horizontal and level with the desk, not sloping up or down. Keep your elbows also at a 90-degree angle and do not let your wrists rest at the edge of the desk.

Use Ergonomic Equipment

The type of gaming chair, monitor, and gaming accessories you use can also affect your health and gameplay. Ensure that you use an ergonomic chair with proper lumbar support and adjustable heights. It would also be useful to invest in an ergonomic keyboard, mouse, and wrist pad to prevent any hand fatigue. For mobile gamers, you could invest in thumb gloves or finger sleeves to prevent hot fingertips.

Take Regular Breaks and Hydrate

While we know that you don’t want to miss a second of gameplay, it’s also very important that you take regular breaks from gaming to stretch your limbs and get a change of scenery. Sitting in the same position for hours on end will cause body stiffness and headaches. Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated as you play.

Invest in a Cooler

While gaming coolers primarily help to dissipate heat, optimize performance, and keep your phone from burning up, they also prevent your hands from burning up as well. REDMAGIC stocks an array of effective coolers to keep your device ergonomic and cool enough to hold for extended periods.

Choosing the Right Setup

Whether it’s a PC or smartphone, gaming ergonomics will depend on you using the correct devices. We all know that our Air Series promotes accessibility, but it also has the added benefit of being entirely ergonomic and lightweight. This means that our new REDMAGIC 11 Air makes gaming easier and more comfortable, improving your gameplay along the way.

Achieving the right ergonomic gaming environment consists of both practical and mental adjustments to ensure that you’re actively considering your physical and psychological needs in every gaming session. At REDMAGIC, we’ve made it all the more easier to maintain a healthy physiological relationship with gaming with the launch of our sleek 11 Air.

Breeze Through Every Arena

The REDMAGIC 11 Air has already made a name for itself as the newcomer and most recent member of our innovative Air Series. Built as a more lightweight, accessible, and affordable version of its big sister, the 11 Pro, the 11 Air easily holds its own when it comes to optimized gameplay and ergonomic considerations.

Armed with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and our very own RedCore R4 gaming chip, the 11 Air effortlessly packs a punch with smooth multitasking, rapid processing power, and a phenomenal 144Hz refresh rate to keep your graphics buttery smooth. Backed by a 7,000mAh fast charging battery and our enhanced Active Airflow ICE Cooling System for seamless heat dissipation, the 11 Air never shies away from a challenge.

When it comes to ergonomics, the 11 Air is uniquely designed with a transparent curved body and a comfortable grip for effortless long gaming sessions without tiring your hands. The phone weighs a light 207g, with a height of 163.82mm and a width of 76.54mm. Despite its comprehensive hardware upgrades, it maintains the same slim profile as the 10 Air, while IP54 dust and water resistance ensure reliable use in gaming or outdoor conditions. Draped in a premium aluminum alloy frame with Corning Gorilla Glass, the 11 Air is still durable and sleek with a futuristic finish and eSport-inspired aesthetic.

Apart from the comfortable grip and weightless ergonomics, the 11 Air also provides certified SGS eye protection with hardware-level low blue light protection. This filters out harmful blue light and safeguards your eyes during extended, intense gaming sessions, preventing fatigue and ensuring the safety and comfort of your eyes.

Ultimately, the 11 Air is the ideal gaming smartphone to use for a lightweight, fatigue-free gaming experience that is kind to both your body and your wallet. However, our entire REDMAGIC range is designed with ergonomics in mind, ensuring that our fans can keep winning while staying healthy.
