We all know that battery life is crucial when it comes to gaming devices. It’s essentially the bread and butter of what makes them attractive to buy, alongside processing power and other capabilities. For gaming tablets especially, endurance is a major selling point. Companies want you to rely on a portable powerhouse throughout your day-to-day tasks, without needing to constantly recharge.
However, it’s easy to get carried away by flowery language and persuasive marketing, often without concrete evidence. Every tablet claims to have an “all-day battery” – but is that more fiction than fact when you’re actually using the device? To find the truth, I’ll be conducting a full-day, no-charging battery test of REDMAGIC’s Astra gaming tablet to see how the battery really performs throughout a regular day with me.
Putting the Astra to the Test
The REDMAGIC Astra gaming tablet arrives in a compact 9.06-inch frame, aiming to strike a balance between performance and portability. While its hardware suggests it’s built for serious gaming, we’re here to dig beneath the surface and see how well it actually performs—especially when it comes to power efficiency and battery life, which are crucial for on-the-go gaming.
The Astra comes with an 8,200mAh battery and features fast charging support. According to REDMAGIC, the tablet uses the “largest battery from a tablet in the 9-inch or smaller class.” Sure enough, when it comes to 9-inch or smaller tablets, an 8,200mAh battery does set a new standard. The brand also assures that you’ll get up to 5.5 hours of Honkai: Star Rail gameplay at full frame rate, up to 33 hours of continuous movie playback, and up to 5.3 hours of Arena of Valor gameplay while livestreaming. However, we’ll be the judge of how true those numbers really are.
My Test Parameters
Now, to get a good overall understanding of the Astra’s battery capacity, we need to put it through the ring with every daily task you might turn to your phone or PC for. The goal is to see how the gaming tablet fares at the end of the day without being charged. To make this test fair, I’ve set up a few conditions as follows:
-
We start with a 100% battery at 9:00 AM and conclude testing at 9:00 PM.
-
Screen brightness will stay at 100% throughout the test.
-
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will both remain on for the test period.
-
Power-saving mode will be disabled throughout the test.
-
No charging.
Now, my typical day is no picnic, and I will be using the Astra tablet quite a lot throughout these 12 hours. So, without further ado, let’s get into my REDMAGIC Astra battery test.

To simplify the process, I’ve mapped out the time slots for the testing period and shown exactly what I’ve used the REDMAGIC Astra tablet for, along with how long each activity took. This will give us an accurate idea of how much battery life was spent throughout the day on each task.

Usage included YouTube, Spotify, several Google productivity apps, browsing, social media, and some intense gaming. The tablet also remained at full brightness throughout the test period and used the highest possible settings in every game played.
